(AP) Some of the priciest apartments in downtown Tulsa are for people with income restricted, and some are for families with a limited income.
The Oklahoma City metro area has an average income of $53,300 and is home to more than 40,000 residents.
The median income for all Tulsa-area residents is $38,000.
Some apartments are priced to be more affordable, such as the $3,300-a-month $900-a,000 apartment at the corner of W. 12th St. and 11th Ave.
Nancy Larkin lives in one of those apartments.
She said she wanted a smaller apartment that was less expensive, but also didn’t want to leave her children behind in Tulsa.
“I’m in the city of Tulsa,” Larkin said.
“I live in a city that’s pretty well integrated, so I don’t have the luxury of people just going and going to the suburbs.”
Some apartments in Tulsa are also priced to get a better view of downtown, which is more than 300 miles away.
Some other apartments in the area are priced more than $1,000, including the $1.8 million $5,000-a+1,700-square-foot apartment at 18th and Washington streets.
A few of those are for family members with limited income, including a $1 million $7,500-a-$8,000 one in the 800 block of 10th Avenue N. and a $7 million $12,500-$16,000 two-bedroom at 907 West 14th Street.
In Tulsa, rents are also more than double the national average, ranging from $2,300 for a one-bedroom apartment in downtown to $9,400 for a two-bed apartment in the suburbs.
The average rent in Tulsa is $2.86 per square foot, according to data from Zillow.
The median rent in downtown is $1.,750.
A woman who rents a two bedroom at a $2 million apartment in Tulsa told The Associated Press the city’s rents are high for an area where there are a lot of apartments with large lots.
She says the apartment owner doesn’t have to pay for landscaping and she would rather live in the neighborhood with good views of downtown.
The Associated Press has tried to contact the owners of the properties in question for comment.
