The owner of an apartment in the trendy Highland Park neighborhood has a simple message for anyone looking to rent an apartment out of the cold: if you can afford it, do it.
Shaun Lohman lives in an apartment on West 6th Street in Highland park with his girlfriend and two children, ages 11 and 12.
He said he was inspired to rent out the unit after a coworker who had a one-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in an adjacent apartment left.
He figured it would make the living easier for the kids.
“I was like, ‘I can do it.’
I was like: ‘I don’t know what the hell I am going to do with my life,'” he said.”
I was very excited when I saw that my friend was leaving, and I said, ‘Wow, I don’t have to worry about anything.
I’m going to move in with my girlfriend.'”
He said he took his girlfriend’s phone number and called her to check on her progress.
She said she was fine and moved in.
“We’ve got a beautiful house, but it’s so cold, and the windows are so cold,” Lohmans girlfriend said.
“There was no heat in the apartment.
I was just so happy.”
He said the apartment has a bathroom, but the only way to get to it is from the outside.
“You just have to drive up the hill and get through the snow,” he said, adding that he’s been to the local airport before.
The landlord, a man who declined to give his name, said he hasn’t been able to get an apartment for months.
He and Lohmen have been living in an Airbnb-like home called the ‘Baron’ for the past three months.
Lohms girlfriend said he is very comfortable there, and it’s been a wonderful experience.
“The Airbnb was great,” he told TechCrunch.
“It’s like the best Airbnb I’ve ever been on.
The security, the privacy, the quality of living is top notch.”
The landlord told TechBuzz that he has two other properties in the neighborhood, which he said he will lease out to tenants for $300 per month.
Lohman said he has been renting out the apartment since March, but has been reluctant to rent it out to other people.
“We haven’t really been able do anything,” he noted.
“If we didn’t rent it, we would probably be out of business.
The apartment is my only real income, so I’m struggling.”
The apartment is located at 815 W. 6th St., Highland Park.
Lahmans girlfriend has not been able and hasn’t visited the property in the past month.
