Westwood has been working on the apartment building, the largest residential development in the U.S., for several years.
But now, with its new owners and developer, the Bay Area-based real estate firm, it looks like the apartment towers are finally here.
The towers are scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2021, at the end of 2019, and by 2021, the project will be up and running.
The project is part of the $5 billion Westwood project.
The Westwood complex is slated to include a new 1,000-unit apartment building at the Bayview campus of Westwood University, a 7,600-square-foot luxury apartment building called the Westwood Center, and two luxury apartment buildings at Westwood, the former Cal Arts building at San Francisco’s Pier 60 and the new Cal Arts at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
The Cal Arts will have a retail center with a restaurant, spa, gym, and tennis courts.
Westwood is also planning to build a hotel on the site, but no details were immediately available.
In 2019, the developer completed the construction of the Bay Point Apartments, a 1,700-square foot luxury apartment complex at the waterfront site of the Santa Cruz Marine Terminal, and the Westport Apartments at the Santa Rosa Pier.
The first of the two Westwood apartments at the San Pablo Pier is slated for completion in 2021.
The Bay Point apartments are slated to open in 2021 at the current location of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The San Pablo apartment building is set to open later that year.
The Santa Rosa apartment building has yet to be built.
The development at the West Bay Point campus will be the third residential development for Westwood.
The developer announced plans for the first two residential towers in December of 2019.
The two projects are connected by a 7-story residential tower that will house the San Diego-based startup company Zuck.
At the West Point campus, the development is set for completion by 2021.
Westwood has worked on the development of a number of residential projects in San Francisco, including the proposed 7,800-square feet apartment complex on the waterfront at the former Alamo Drafthouse site at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue.
In the fall of 2020, Westwood completed construction of a 2,400-squarefoot apartment building that is slated, in 2021, to open at the site of a former Alcoa facility.
In December of 2021 at least one of the projects at the new Westwood campus was finalized, with the San Jacinto Apartments now set to be finished in the summer of 2021.
A new 7,500-square meter residential tower at the Cal Arts campus is also set to go up in the coming year.
Another new project, the West Portal apartments, are scheduled for completion at the Alamo, a former industrial site on the San Gabriel River, in 2022.
It’s unclear whether the West Oakland and the nearby West Berkeley apartment complexes will see the same attention as the West Woods projects.
According to the West Coast Association of Realtors, the number of apartment units in San Mateo County rose from 6,822 in 2016 to 8,926 in 2020, an increase of nearly 3,000 units.
That number rose to 13,067 in 2021 from 13,936 in 2020.
The new units at the other projects, such as the San Ramon, San Benito, and Westwood complexes, all have not been finalized, and they are still being reviewed by the city of San Francisco.
However, the increase in units in the Bay area is expected to continue to rise.
The number of units in SF grew by more than 100,000 in 2020 from 604,000 to 704,200, according to data from the city’s housing authority.
What’s next for the Bay?
As Westwood’s Bay Point project continues to gain momentum, the company also announced the opening of its new Bay City complex, which is scheduled to open sometime in the fall.
The facility is being developed in partnership with the city, with a goal of providing 300 new units of affordable housing over the next decade.
The complex will feature approximately 2,000 rental units and 2,500 commercial units.
The units will be in the middle of the city.
Meanwhile, the other two residential projects are set to come online soon, with construction beginning at the newly opened San Francisco Art Museum.
One of the units will open in the near future, and one is scheduled for 2021.
